Their accomplishments run the gamut from established organizations to grass-roots groups like CC’s Kidz, started by Cheretta Stewart.
A former teen mom, Stewart, now 28, formed the Bedford-Stuyvesant group to encourage young mothers to “get off the block,” and take their kids to the city’s cultural institutions. The group plans trips to dance and opera, and helps find funding for moms who can’t afford tickets.
